musings on turning 26 + red lipstick

I turned 26 a few weeks ago and in those weeks I've decided what my birthday "resolution" for the year will be. In the past I've thrown birthday parties and made huge lists of things I need to accomplish. This year I skipped the party and just went to a wonderful dinner with my family. In lieu of a laundry list of goals I only have one... Start wearing red lipstick. I know in blogger years I'm way behind on the trend but for me, for some reason, 26 feels like the perfect age to start wearing red lipstick. It just feels so worldly, feminine and classic... I can't wait to try it out. So wish me luck on my 26th year and if you have any tips for sporting red lips I would love to hear them!

  2. What a lovely resolution! I have a dear friend who stopped wearing red lipstick because her husband didn't like it and she sort of lost some of her personality in the process! Guess that stuff has more power than we think! Best of luck with your new style venture! Happy Birthday sweets! xoxo

  3. my best lipstick advice: exfoliate! (you can buy fancy sugar-scrubs for your lips or you can use a soft-bristled toothbrush)

that said, I can't do red. maybe it's because I never have, but if I wear anything brighter than pink, it's like "lips, where are you going with that face?!"

  4. I started wearing red lipstick the year I moved to Oregon from San Diego because my face lost all the color and freckles I was used to and just needed something . Now I wear it almost every day. Red lipstick is a gateway lipstick!

I wear Mac's red Lip Lacquer a lot of the time, it stays on all day and you don't have to worry about it smearing.
... but you can't beat the color of Chanel's Dragon

    Happy 26th birthday!

    Lady Danger.

    hella hot.

I wish I could wear red lipstick. Please make this happen, post pictures, and teach all of us "lip gloss only n00bs" how to rock it.

  7. i never thought that i could do any kind of bold lipstick. this past winter, my siblings and I shoveled a neighbor's dirveway. she sells avon. my sister and i went through all the make up samples she had and I found some wonderful dark lipstick. i love wearing it. although i haven't worn lipstick at all this summer, i can hardly wait to break it out for the next big shindig.

as for tips: if you have a bold lip, do something more natural for the eyes. i do like coupling a dark lip with a black liquid liner. it's classic.

  9. I love me some red lipstick.

Makeup Forever has a nice little color wheel thing that will help you find your best reds based on your other skin/hair tones - find it at Sephora. I wear their Rouge Artist Intense high-pigment lipstick and I'm addicted.

My trick is to fill in your entire lip with a nude pencil before applying. This makes it stay long and not wear off in patches.

Also, don't forget or be too lazy to wash your face at night. I've ruined a few good pillowcases this way!

  11. A very happy belated birthday, and cheers to red lips! My tips? Exfoliate your lips or use a good balm at night, line your lips with nude liner to keep your stick from feathering, and pick a color you can't live without!

  16. Happy belated birthday! First off, are we the same person? I'm turning 26 in a few weeks and, despite usually being a big ol' party-thrower, I've decided to keep it lowkey with a nice dinner and lovely day of relaxation, too. Maybe it's something about being in the latter half of the 20s?

Also, I completely adore your 26-year-old goal of wearing red lipstick -- definitely a glamorous way to celebrate a great upcoming year!

  20. I think almost EVERYONE can pull off red lipstick, you just need to find the right red for you. Even the subtlest variation from your "right" shade can make you end up looking very peculiar so head to your nearest makeup counter and have a good play around with samples, talk to someone about your colouring and what you need as a result of that!
